The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team needed an epic comeback on Thursday night at Montana Tech. But the Skylights couldn't quite pull it off.
Northern fell to the Orediggers 65-55 in Butte. MSU-N fell behind 20-11 after the first quarter and were down 41-19 at halftime as the Orediggers played at a high level.
Northern rebounded in the second half, but it was too little, too late as Tech held Northern to just 32 percent shooting and 6-of-21 from three. The Diggers' also out-rebounded the Skylights 43-38, while Northern 13 points from Taya Trottier and 12 by Canzas HisBadHorse in their first Frontier Conference loss of the new season.
Northern returned home to host the nationally-ranked Rocky Mountain College Battlin' Bears on Saturday, and things didn't get much better.
The Skylights lost to Rocky Mountain College 67-44 last Saturday in the Armory. Rocky started strong, as they outscored the Skylights 17-12. The Skylights held the Battlin' Bears to 10 points in the second quarter going into halftime trailing 27-20. The Battlin' Bears had a good second half to pull away.
The Skylights were led by Taya Trottier who had nine points and four assists. Shyan Krass added nine points. Canzas HisBadHorse added nine points The Battlin' Bears were led Gracee Lekvold who had 14 points and seven rebounds. Iliana Moran added 14 points.
Northern fell to 1-2 in the Frontier and 10-6 overall. The Skylights visit Providence tonight at 5 in Great Falls, then come home to host Carroll College Saturday at 2 p.m.
