What a way to open Frontier Conference play.
Having struggled against the Montana Western Bulldogs in recent years, the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team turned the tables Saturday in the Armory Gymnasium.
The Skylights beat the Bulldogs 83-62 to start 1-0 in league play.
The game started slow, as the Skylights scored eight points to Western's six. Northern pushed the lead in the second quarter going into halftime up 31-23. The Skylights went on a 18-6 run to finish the third quarter. The Skylights shot an incredible 83 percent from the field and three in the fourth to end the game by pulling away from Western.
The Skylights shot 63 percent from the field, adding a three-point percentage record of 64 percent, and 82 percent from the free-throw line. Western shot 36 percent from the field, 25 percent from the 3-point line, and 66 percent from the foul line as Northern played at a high level defensively.
The Skylights were led by Taya Trottier who went 4-5 from the three-point line with 18 points and added eight assists. Savannah Toms added 15 points going 5-9 from the field. Shyan Krass added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Bulldogs were led by Trinidie Nichols who had 18 points going 7-16 from the field. Keke David added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Northern improved to 10-4 overall as the Skylights prepare to play at Montana Tech tonight and return home to host Rocky Mountain College Saturday at 2 in the Armory.
