On a cold, snow afternoon in Havre, the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team was just as cold inside the Armory Gymnasium.
Last Saturday, the Lights opened the 2025 Frontier Conference season with a 58-42 loss to the Montana Western Bulldogs.
The first half went back and forth, until the Bulldogs took the lead to with seven minutes to goo. But the Lights weren't going away, as they cut the lead to four going into halftime (29-25). The Bulldogs pushed the lead to double digits early in the second half, and also held the Lights to just 17 points in the final 20 minutes.
The Lights shot a field goal percentage of 40 percent, 30 percent from the arc, and 57 percent from the free throw line. Montana Western shot 42 percentage from the field, 33 percent from the 3-point line, and 62 percent from the free throw.
The Lights were led by Leon Sayers IV who went 5-8 from the field with 15 points and added five rebounds. Jack Reardon added 10 points. The Bulldogs were led by Kyle Gruhler who had 14 points and seven rebounds. Alan Kane added 14 points.
The loss dropped Northern to 0-1 in the league and 6-8 overall ahead of tonight's road game at nationally-ranked Montana Tech. Northern plays Rocky Mountain College next Saturday at home.
