It should be an exciting season for the Havre High boys basketball team. Veteran head coach Walynn Burgess returns a talented group of Blue Ponies as Havre looks to return to the Class A state tournament come March.
The Ponies open their new season this weekend, and they'll have some familiar faces leading the way, led by returning Class A All-State guard Tre Gary. A four-year varsity performer, Gary is one of three returning starters for the Pony boys, who finished fourth in the Eastern A a year ago.
Also back for the Ponies is senior guard Matt Huse, who earned Northeast A All-Conference a season ago. Inside, the Ponies also return big-man Kash Keller, who will be in his third season playing at the varsity level.
Havre will also rely on a group of veterans who have prior varsity experience to help lead the way this season., including Griffin Terry, Brayden Ereaux, Aiden Moomey and Dax Oswalt.
Of course, as talented as the Ponies are, they'll have to battle in the tough Eastern A, and play a difficult schedule that includes games against Northeast A opponents Lewistown, Miles City, Sidney and Glendive, while the likes of Billings Central, Lockwood and Laurel will be tough from the Southeast A.
All roads will lead to the Eastern A Divisional Tournament, which runs Feb. 27-March 1 in Billings, while the Class A State Tournament runs March 12-15, also in Billings.
"We are excited to get the new season started this week, coming off a conference title and a run to state last year you always hope the boys don't lose focus on the work that needs to be done during the offseason to help prepare for another run, we felt like we had a very productive and good offseason and are ready for the new season to start.. excited about the pieces we have and the development we had over the summer but know that it takes alot of work to have success year in and year out but we are definitely excited about the new challenges that await us this year starting with Miles City," Burgess said.
The Blue Pony boys open their season this Saturday at Miles City.
