Lights wrestle well at Grand View Open

Wrestling in an early-season tournament, the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team made the most of the Grand View Open.

The Lights got a championship from sophomore Orion Thivierge at 174 pounds, as he won five times. The Lights also had multiple winners in almost every weight class.

Northern returns to Cascade Conference competition this weekend when they wrestle at Eastern Oregon and Evergreen State on Friday, then compete in the Spokane Open on Sunday.

Grand View Open

125 - Kolten Powers falls in his first match against Dj Bonam by a fall 6:01. He dominated his next two oppnents beating B. Dyer by a fall 1:43 and T. Jordan by a fall 2:49. Powers was one point shy in his next match to move on.

133 - Kade Willis lost his first match against Haden Hernandez by a Fall 4:41. In his first consolation round, Willis beat T. Johnson by a tech fall 18-2. He wins his next match against H. Holguin by a fall 3:34. Kade loses out against L. Scorpill by a fall :27.

141 - Caleb Morales beat Colin Little by a fall 2:39. Morales was one point away on moving on in the Championship round, however he lost to L. Kimbley by a decision 11-10. He beat P. Moore by a tech fall 16-0. He falls in his next match against Z. Fitzgareld by a tech fall 20-4.

149 - Caeleb Ishmael lost his first round against Eric Almarinez by a tech fall 18-4. He wins his next match against D. Campbell by a fall 4:44. Caeleb beat his next opponent by a major decision 16-5. He falls in the next match against D. Swanson by a fall 6:28.

157-Justin Windauer won his first match against Cade Braun by a decision 5-3. He drops in his second match against C. Meunier by a fall :33. Windauer beats J. Johnson by a major decision 13-1. He continues on to beat E. Heard by a medical forfeit. Justin battled in his next match dropping by a close decision 8-5.

165-Travis Waldner falls in his first match against Kole Marko by a close decision 5-2. He goes and beats his next opponent by a Fall 1:42. Travis pushes through to the next round by beating B. Moore by a major decision 9-1. He falls out to C. Koedam by a decision 8-2.

165 - Ryan Graves lost in his first match against Jovon Mitchell by a tech fall 20-4. Graves bounces back beating C. Murabito with a close decision 9-6. He loses out to B. Parks by a fall 4:29.

174 - Devin Crawford dominated in his first match against Tony Connor winning by a fall 1:43. He drops his second match to L. Odom by a decision 4-3. Crawford pushed back to take the next match by a fall 1:44. He beats J. Catagas by a fall 2:17. His next round, Devin falls to N. Fox by a tech fall 20-4.

174 First Place - Orion Thivierge dominates in his first four matches in the championship rounds. He beat Uriah Clay by a fall 1:43. He goes on to beat T. Daniels by a tech fall 15-0. He breezes by C. Rutter by a fall :20. He beats M. Roper by a fall 1:28. His fifth match was just like the others. He pinned T. Juarez in 1:23 to move on to the Championship round. The Championship round was his most challenging match, as he won by a decision 4-1 to L. Bowling.

184 - Rylin Burns wins his first match against Lucas Hageman by a major decision 18-4. He drops to B. Milster by an injury 5:49. Burns had to medically forfeit the next round.

197 - Austin Vanek falls in the first round against Carson Babcock by a decision 4-1. Vanek dominated in his next two rounds beating J. Schuttler by a major decision and beating H. Lehrke by a fall 2:44. He battles in his next match losing in a close decision 8-7 against E. Karas.

197 - AJ Harris falls in his first match against Z. Shumway by a major decision 15-4. He bounces back beating A. Adams by a tech fall 20-4. He loses out to S. Johnson by a close decision 5-2.

285 - Shane Mattson won his first match against D. Hoobery by a major decision 9-0. He goes on to beat O. Varela by a major decision 9-1. He lost against A. Ahrendsen by a tech fall 17-2. He lost his next match against R. Boersma by a fall 1:33.
