The Montana Western Bulldogs came to Havre and proved exactly why they're one of the best teams in all of the NAIA.
Saturday at Tilleman Field, No. 4 Western cruised to a 56-14 win over the Lights.
Northern tallied 191 yards of total offense, with 146 on the ground, while the Bulldogs accounted for 358, of which 220 yards were in the air.
Western shut out the Lights in the first half going into 35-0. The Lights scored scored on a one-yard Mason Dionne touchdown in the third quarter, and added a Dionne two-yard run in the fourth. However, it wasn't enough was Western improved to 7-1 overall.
Northern quarterback Ashton Platt went just 3-for-9 through the air for 40 yards. Devin Shelton caught four passes for 45 yards. Dionne carried the ball 22 times for 109 yards. Northern's defense was led by Lucas Thacker with 10 tackles. Braydon Cline added five tackles and one sack.
Montana Western quarterback Michael completed 9-of-13 passes for 97 yards and three touchdowns. Jake Humphrey led the team in rushing yards with 97 and two touchdowns. Dylan Shipley led the receivers with three catches for 116 yards. The defense was led by Landon Charlton who had five tackles and one interception and a return for 21 yards.
The Lights fell to 0-8 on the season and 0-7 in the Frontier Conference. Northern travels to Butte this Saturday to face Montana Tech. The 13th-ranked Orediggers are 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the Frontier.
