Lights lose heartbreaker at EOU

The Montana State University-Northern football team has had its share of success against Eastern Oregon in recent years. And the Lights came close last Saturday.

But it wasn't close enough.

Northern dropped to 0-5 on the season as the Lights fell 28-21 at EOU.

The Lights fell behind 7-0 but took a 14-7 lead into halftime. Mason Dionne scored on a 3-yard run and Zach Brooks there a 21-yard TD pass to lift the Lights to a 7-point edge.

EOU however, scored 21 answered points, and though Brooks threw a TD pass with 3:00 left in the game, it was enough to pull the Lights even.

The lose was a tough one for the Lights, but they did play well in key stretches. The Lights had nearly 400 yards of total offense, and no turnovers. Brooks passed for 227 yards, while Jeremiah Benson caught three passes and rushed for 36 yards. Devin Shelton had a big day as well, catching seven passes for 119 yards. Brooks also rushed for 42 yards, while Dionne finished with 55 yards.

Devin Carmona led the Northern defense with 13 tackles, while Spencer Lehnerz had 11. Brayden Cline had a sack.

Northern returns home to host The College of Idaho this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Tilleman Field. The Yotes are nationally-ranked at 5-2 overall.
