After a second week off already this season, the Montana State University-Northern football team is ready to return to the field.
And that chance comes this Saturday when the Lights travel to Carroll College to face the Fighting Saints. Northern was last in action Sept. 21 when the Lights dropped their home-opener to Arizona Christian 31-10 at Tilleman Field, as MSU-N is off to an 0-3 start and 0-1 in the Frontier Conference.
Things won’t get any easier for the Lights in the newly-remodeled Nelson Stadium in Helena. Carroll, of former Havre head coach Troy Purcell, is 3-1 this season, and is fresh off a win over ACU last Saturday in Arizona. Carroll’s offense features Jack Prka, one of the best quarterbacks in the Frontier, while Peter Minnart is a top running back. Bodt Smith and Ely Aby meanwhile, anchor a stingy Saints’ defense that pitched a shutout at ACU last weekend.
The Lights will look to star running back Mason Dionne to spark a n offense that averages less than 10 points per game on the other side of the ball, as head coach Jerome Souers’ team looks for their first win of 2024.
Northern and Carroll will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday in Helena. The Lights then head to Eastern Oregon next Saturday.
