Obituary - Ernest Edward 'Ernie/Buster' Harrell Jr.

Ernest Edward Harrell Jr., known to many as Ernie or Buster, passed away unexpectedly on September 17, 2024, at the age of 75.

Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at the Havre Van Orsdel United Methodist Church.

Ernie was born November 4, 1948, at the family ranch east of Roy, Montana. Delivered by his father, he weighed less than 6 pounds, earning the distinction of being the smallest baby born among his nine siblings. He grew up on the ranch and graduated from Fergus High School in 1967. During his high school years Ernie wrestled, played football and joined the Future Farmers of America (FFA) program, developing leadership that would guide him throughout his life.

After high school, Ernie proudly served in the U.S. Navy for four years as a Boatswain. In 1972, he joined the U.S. Army National Guard, continuing his service for 35 years and achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. Ernie was a talented softball player and spent many years playing on a team made up of fellow National Guardsmen in Havre. In addition to softball, Ernie was an avid bowler and enjoyed being part of a bowling league for many years, where his love of camaraderie was evident.

From around 1977 to 1984, Ernie worked as a butcher for Pierce Packing in Billings, MT. His time in this role was another testament to his strong work ethic and dedication to providing for his family. Following his retirement from the Guard, Ernie worked at Northern Montana Hospital, officially retiring in 2015.

In late November of 1980, Ernie’s life changed when he met his soul mate, Irene. They hit it off immediately, going on their first date on New Year’s Eve, and by March of 1981, they were married. When they met, Ernie had two children, and Irene had two children of her own. They blended their families, and together, they welcomed another child into their lives. Ernie fell quickly and deeply for Irene, and their love was apparent to everyone who knew them. He would do anything for her, and they spent their lives building a strong, loving family together. In 1990, the couple moved to Havre, Montana, where they continued raising their family and welcomed anyone in need into their home.

Ernie was known for his great smile, big heart, sharp sense of humor, and unwavering support for his family. He loved playing pranks, camping, card games, and spending time with his loved ones. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the center of his world, and he was happiest when surrounded by them. His love for his family was boundless, and he was proud of every one of them.

A wonderful friend and neighbor, Ernie was loved by everyone who knew him. He had a great smile, generous spirit, and the ability to make everyone feel welcome.

A devoted fan of the Denver Broncos, Ernie also had a love for John Wayne movies and bald eagles, collecting memorabilia that reflected his interests. He had a soft spot for dogs, often saying “no more,” but always making room for another. Ernie also supported local sports, cheering on the Havre Blue Ponies and the Montana State University-Northern teams, rarely missing a game.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Nona Harrell; his daughter Melanie; his brothers Danny Joe, Tom, and Jesse; his sister Tamie and her husband Kevin; and his ex-wife, Helen.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Irene; his children Melissa (Russ), Melinda (Mark), Dana (Charles), Walker, Easton (Christina), and adopted daughter Julie (Jared); his 13 grandchildren, Alysha, Hollie, Morgan, Nick, Kayla, Brandon, Kamron, Preston, Kaden, Parker, Ronan, Alyssa, and Alivia; and his 10 great-grandchildren, Levi, Brylon, Ryker, Owen, Malcome, Harper, Sutton, Jacobii, Adeline, and Leeland. He is also survived by his siblings Lewis (Mona), Pat (Wayne), Mike (Cass), Eddie (Larry), and Tim (Susan); brother-in-law Dan, sister-in-law Paula; his special nephew-in-law Jeff, and Nick, Dirk and Charlie who held an exceptional place in Ernie’s heart, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Ernie’s warmth, laughter, and love for life will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
