44th Annual Black Powder Spring/Fall Shoot Held at Fort Assiniboine

Seventy-two shooters participated in the 44th annual Bullhook Bottoms Black Powder Club

Spring/Fall Shoot held Aug. 31 and Sept. 1-2 at historic Fort Assiniboine south of Havre.

The Spring Shoot normally held on Memorial Day weekend was canceled because of flooding and moved to Labor Day weekend. The weather was excellent for all three days. Shooting conditions would be rated as excellent. Shooters came from all parts of Montana with attendance down from 2023. Two new records were recorded this weekend. Luke Griggs, Havre, shot a 47x in the Junior 50-yard cartridge offhand match, while Hondo Owens, Havre, set a new record in the Dwight Young Memorial 50-yard cross stick match with a 50xxxx. A record of 50xxx that was held by Welsey Krause, Medicine Hat, since 1993.

Brad Bender, Havre, won the Overall Aggregate with a score of 189 points in matches including 25-yard offhand, 50-yard offhand, 100-yard offhand, 50-yard cross sticks and 100-yard cross sticks.

Tom Brown, Havre, won the 12 shot silhouette match with 10 hits out of 12. The offhand match has four distances three shots each at 4-inch buffalo at 50 yards, pigs at 100 yards, turkeys at 150 yards and a ram at 200 yards.

The Cross Stick Aggregate went to Scott Doney, Havre with an 91x on two targets, 50 and 100 yards.

The Offhand Aggregate was won by Brad Bender, Havre, with 121 on three targets, 25, 50 and 100 yards.

The Pistol Aggregate went to Tom Brown, Havre with 44xx. The 10-shot 25-yard pistol match had a new twist to it this year in that the shooter had to kill three clay pigeons before they could shoot

for score. The maximum score could only be 70 points.

The Women’s Aggregate was claimed by Kaci Hipple, Havre, with 116 points on three targets, 25-OH, 50-OH and 50 cross sticks.

In the black powder cartridge events, Troy Brugman, Great Falls, won the Men’s Cartridge Ag- gregate with 163 on four targets; Women’s Aggregate went to Lacey Huseby, Circle, with 93 and the Junior Aggregate was won by Travis Huseby, Havre, with 126. The cartridge events consist of four targets including 25-yard offhand, 50-yard offhand, 100-yard offhand and 100-yard cross sticks.

Brad Bender, Havre, won the Primitive Aggregate event with a score of 105. The event includes 20 different fun shots such as cut a playing card, cut the strings, split the ball on ax head, frogs on a log shot from a canoe, and offhand-offhand shot (meaning if you are right handed you shoot left handed), flies on the wall and several long range shots. All targets are at various ranges.

Hawk and Knife throw for adults was won by Cliff Plum, Havre, for juniors Gage Chapman, Havre, and sub juniors went to Everet Pinder, Nashua.

The Bonita Griggs Memorial Frying Pan Throw for Women’s division was won by Kaci Hipple, Havre, 58 ft. 10 in.; Seniors division went to Cristine Adamson, Great Falls, 51 ft. 3 in.; Juniors division was won by Kodi Sparks, Havre, 48 ft. 9 in.; Pee-wee division went to Fallon Pinder, Nashua, 38 ft. 5 in.

The fire starting/pancake race Heat 1 was won by Tammy Griggs, Marysville and Sadie Griggs, Havre, at 1 min. 48 sec.; Heat 2 went to Bailey Griggs, Havre and Amiah Davis, Havre at 1 min. 27 sec.; Heat 3 was won by Bailey Griggs, Havre and Lexi Sparks, Havre, 1 min. 21 sec.
