Suicide Awareness Walk set for tonight

Press release

The Hill County Suicide Awareness Coalition will be hosting its 10th annual Suicide Awareness Walk on the Montana State University-Northern campus tonight in recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day.

Participants should begin gathering at the clock tower south of Cowan Hall on the MSUN campus after 6:30 p.m. and speakers will begin at 7 p.m.

This year's theme is "Talk Away the Dark." Cadence Kallenberger, Havre High School senior and Key Club president will speak at the event.

"Talking about the hard things, including emotions is often what [teens] need the most," said Kallenberger, who encourages youth to find someone to talk to in their lives. "Opening up to be truly honest with what is heavy can help you talk your way out of the darkness and give you hope."

Members of the community will then be invited to share how suicide has affected their lives. A gentle 1-mile walk will then convene in a path around the MSUN campus. It is wheelchair and stroller accessible.

A QPR Suicide Gatekeeper training is scheduled Friday, Sept. 27. from 3-5 p.m. in Northern's Student Union Buidling Conference Room. The training is about two hours long and covers a variety of topics around suicide prevention, most importantly how to question, persuade and refer someone who may be suicidal.
