The third time wasn't the charm for the Montana State University-Northern football team.
Having beaten the Mayville State Comets in their previous two meetings, Northern couldn't make it three in a row as the Lights fell to the Comets 24-6 Thursday night in North Dakota.
Despite a 105-yard game from former Havre Blue Pony Mason Dionne, who scored Northern's lone touchdown, the Lights couldn't muster enough offense in the end.
Down 10-0 in the second quarter, Dionne ripped off a 61-yard run for a score to make it 10-6. However, the Comets scored twice in the second half, while Northern managed just 54 yards through the air. In all, MSU-N had 155 yards of offense, while the Comets totaled 288. Brady Smelser led the Northern defense with six tackles.
The Lights, 0-1, will now play their second non-conference game of the season when the travel to Rocky Mountain College next Saturday.
