News you can use

Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

Be followers

You know, Lord, several of us girls were together, enjoying our time when Alyson spoke: "My grandmother emigrated from England in the early 1900's with her husband and two little girls. Their home was a simple bungalow. Water came from a cistern, the toilet was at the end of the garden, and the heat was a wood stove."

We perked up our ears. Alyson sighed and continued: "The family had little by today's standards. They lived on my grandfather's income as a streetcar conductor and what they grew in their garden. Sundays were spent at the Salvation Army temple. From their days in England, both grandparents were active Salvationists.

"I remember the word 'self-denial.' As a small child, it meant little to me. But now I understand. Out of the little they had; they were prepared to give up something for others who had less than they had. But as a small child, I saw something else. I saw a home filled with happiness, enjoyment in little things, love and laughter. Maybe they were putting our text into practice, Matthew 16:24, was grandmother's favorite verse. Grandma said that they had to decide what they had to offer."

Cynthia spoke: "I don't think any of us brought a Bible with us – do you know what that verse says?"

Alyson smiled, nodded her head and said; "Of course I do, are you ready?" We nodded our heads, she began: 'If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.' I also remember times that Grandpa would also pray: 'Help us, O God, to deny self and follow where you lead us.' He'd smile and sometimes add: 'O God, how do we thank you for your redeeming love?' because of his job, sometimes he knew someone who needed something that he/they could offer."

Thank You, Lord for Your love.

Love Mara
