Two-vehicle crash near Box Elder kills one

A two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 87 near Box Elder at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, resulted in the death of one 74-year-old Havre woman with two other people taken to the hospital.

The coroner was not available by printing deadline of this story to release the name, but an obituary notice Friday said Cheryl L. Kirkaldie of Havre, 74, died as a result of injuries sustained in a crash July 17.

The Montana Highway Patrol crash fatality report said the two vehicles, a Ford F-150 and a Chevrolet Tahoe, were northbound on U.S. Highway 87 near Mile Marker 94 at about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday.

A Box Elder man, who was driving the Ford, failed to properly signal a turn, the report said.

The Chevrolet, driven by a 65-year-old Havre man with the 74-year-old Havre woman as a passenger, turned into the southbound lane in an attempt to avoid the Ford, but still hit it.

Both vehicles went off the roadway, the report said. All occupants were taken to the hospital where the Havre woman succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.
