Celebrating History: Election season 1924

By Emily Mayer

Candidates continued to file for public office this week in 1924. Former district judge W. B. Rhoades filed for lieutenant governor, J. H. Fenton for state representative, Phil Jestrab for Hill County Commissioner, Robert Patterson also filed for state representative, A. J. Hunter for Constable, Phil Clack and T. W. MacKenzie both filed for Clerk of Court, W. N Trudeau for state Senator, Earl Bronson for Clerk and Recorder and W. A. Murdock for Administrator. R. G. Linebarger and Frank N. Utter took out ads for their respective offices, but neither are what we would describe as an attack ad. Both ads focused on their qualifications and experience, not tearing down their opponent. Who said the old ways should be abandoned for “change” because they’re outdated and don’t conform to “modern sensibilities?”

On this issue, give me the old days!

In much happier news, the Security State Bank was ready to re-open, only with a new name and new leaders at the helm. This article was printed on the front page of the July 20, 1924, edition of the Havre Daily Promoter:

HILL COUNTY STATE BANK ELECTS ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Hill County State bank held the first meeting of its stockholders yesterday and named a board of directors, who will select the officials early the coming week, so that the bank will be ready for business July 26, the date under which the new institution must open under the contract between the stockholders of the old Security State bank and the creditors, providing for the reorganization.

The board of directors selected is of Dan O’Neil, B. F. Hillsabeck, George J. Bonine, Max P. Kuhr, H. W. Stringfellow, T. J. Troy, Sidney Hirschberg, E. T. Broadwater and George B. Bourne.

The stockholders of the Security State bank held a meeting Friday and ratified the contract under which the new bank takes over a portion of the assets of the old Security.

Tuesday, July 22, the Promoter printed an article regarding the officers chosen for the new/old bank:

GEORGE B. BOURNE PRESIDENT OF HILL COUNTY STATE BANK

Officers of Institution to Take Over Security Are Chosen; O. R. Rubie Elected Cashier of New Bank

Members of the board of directors of the Hill County State bank, which has been organized to take over a portion of the assets of the Old Security under a reorganization agreement between creditors and stockholders of the old bank, met last evening and elected officers.

George B. Bourne was chosen president; G. J. Bonine, vice president; Dan O’Neil vice president; and O. R. Rubie, cashier.

Rubie was cashier of the Box Elder State bank at Box Elder and formerly was connected with the Security State bank. He will be succeeded at Box Elder by John Brown.

Bourne was cashier of the Old Security. Bonine is a well known resident of Havre, has been a deputy in charge of the bank for the sate examiner, and made a record in bank reorganization in the southern part of the state. Dan O’Neil is master mechanic of the Great Northern and one of the best known railroad men.

The new bank will open for business Saturday.

Let’s hope the good news and good campaigning continues in 1924!
