The Havre High tennis teams have a big weekend ahead - for a number of reasons.
When the Blue Ponies play in Cut Bank Friday and Saturday at the Class A Duals, it will be just their third event of a season that's already a third of the way over. And considering Havre doesn't have an event on the calendar next weekend, the reps the Ponies will get in Cut Bank this weekend will be huge.
Add to that, Havre will be battling four Class A rivals this weekend in Cut Bank, as the Ponies, of head coach Jeff Miller, take on Billings Central and Polson, two teams expected to vie for a state title this season, on Friday. On Saturday, HHS battles traditional rival Hardin, as well as Libby.
That's four really good duals in a tournament that has been really good to Havre over the years. The Class A Invite was the dream child of longtime Cut Bank head coach Jim Gregg. The Wolves have long been a premier B-C tennis program, and now two decades ago, Gregg decided to bring the best of the best to Cut Bank.
And that has always included the Blue Ponies. And this weekend, Havre will look to be among the best yet again.
On the boys side, Havre's veteran seniors, Carter Spangler, Reid Kato and Jackson Headdress will lead the way, while Callen Stoner and Max Spangler are key to Havre's success as well.
On the girls side, seniors Chloe Bricker, Mylee Shennum and Kylie Greenwood are also leading the way for a young HHS girls team that is really starting to emerge this spring.
Of course, all four boys and girls teams Havre plays in Cut Bank will be really good. Polson is a defending state champion, Billings Central is always loaded on both sides, and Hardin and Libby are stacked with good players as well. So the competition HHS will get, combined with the good weather expected, will be key as Havre heads into the middle portion of its tennis season.
The Ponies will play Central and Polson on day one of the Class A Invite, then take on Libby and Hardin on Saturday.
