After his school years, he worked on the family farm, and entered the U.S. Army in 1951. He served in the Korean War until his discharge in 1953, when he returned home to North Dakota. There he met Patricia Carlson, and the couple married in 1955. They moved to Havre, MT, where they made their home and had five children before divorcing.

In Havre, Einar worked as the manager at Nelson Optical for many years, and then moved on to manage the optical lab for Doctors Wilkins and Beardsley.

In 1987, he married Jan Wells. The couple moved to LeGrande, OR, where they opened Einar's Unique Optique, which they operated for 25 years before retiring.
