Three suspects arrested in Box Elder homicide case

Three people have been arrested in connection with the shooting deaths of two Rocky Boy men, Darin Benard Caplette, 41, and Thomas Roderick Yallup, 42, who were killed early Thursday morning in Box Elder, in what appears to be a targeted assault.

A release from the Hill County Sheriff’s Office, put out just after the Havre Daily News’ Friday morning deadline, said the three people have been arrested and charged in relation to the deaths, which are being considered homicide.

The release says Angel Isaiah Castillo Haffley, 18, of Corning, California, has been arrested for deliberate homicide and Angelo Hawk Sanchez, 18, also of Corning, Calfiornia, has been arrested for deliberate homicide by accountability.

A 16-year-old boy also has been arrested for deliberate homicide in connection with the case, Hill County Sheriff and Coroner Jamie Ross said in the release.

A Thursday press release from Hill County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched to a shots-fired call in the parking lot of the D&L Bar at 1:30 a.m. that morning, where Caplette and Yallup were found, having been shot at the gas pumps.

Both men were transported to the hospital, where they died from their wounds.

Ross said in the release that this appears to have been a targeted assault and the bodies of Caplette and Yallup will be sent to the Montana State Crime Lab for autopsy.

The Friday release said the three suspects are in custody and would have initial appearances in Hill County Justice Court, but the juvenile case will be heard in District Court.

Hill County Sheriff Jamie Ross thanked the agencies assisting the investigation for their hard work in the release as well.

Ross said it is a complicated case involving multiple jurisdictions, crime scenes and potential witnesses which required the collective work of the Hill County Sheriff’s Office, Chouteau County Sheriff’s Office, Blaine County Sheriff’s Office, Cascade County Sheriff’s Office, Rocky Boy’s Tribal Police, Havre Police Department, the Tri-County Drug Task Force, the Montana Department of Criminal Investigation, the Montana Department of Corrections Probation and Parole, Montana Highway Patrol and the FBI.
