Thanks to a purchase former Cut Bank legendary head coach Jim Gregg made decades ago, the Havre High tennis teams usually get to make their season debut no matter the weather.
And while the weather was atrocious outside this past weekend, the Ponies, along with Cut Bank and Conrad, got their tennis season started on the indoor courts in the Cut Bank Gymnasium.
And Havre did quite well, too.
The Blue Pony boys beat Cut Bank 4-3 in the opening dual, with the doubles teams Carter and Max Spangler, Reid Kato and Callen Stoner, and Carter Chagnon and Mason Kinsella all rolling to wins. Wyatt Jelly also won at No. 2 singles for the Ponies.
Havre also edged Conrad 4-3, with all three of the Pony doubles teams winning again, while Aiden Nitz also got a victory at No. 4 singles for the Ponies.
The HHS girls beat Conrad 4-3 as well. Tyley Hemmer won at No. 2 singles for the Ponies, while the tandems of Chloe Bricker and Mylee Shennum, Heather Herring and Alera Chandler, and Emma Bitz and Louise Evanelista all won.
The Ponies fell to Cut Bank 5-2 for Havre's only defeat of the day. Hemmer got a win at No. 2 singles for the Ponies, while Herring and Chandler were victorious at No. 2 doubles.
Second-year head coach Jeff Miller said his teams were locked in in Cut Bank and played very well.
The Ponies will next compete at their own Havre Invitational April 5-6 in Havre.
