This past Friday in the Class A State Tournament in Butte, the Havre High boys basketball team's season came to an end. In a loser-out game against the Billings Central Rams, the Blue Ponies suffered a 78-68 loss to end the year.
Looking to keep their season alive, the Ponies jumped out to an 8-4 lead to start the game. But the Rams went on an 8-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. The teams exchanged baskets over the next few minutes until the Rams held a 19-16 lead. Kyler Northrop then knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Rams a 22-16 lead heading into the second quarter.
Through most of the second quarter, the Ponies were able to keep pace with the Rams. With less than five minutes left before halftime, the Rams only had a 28-25 lead. But the Rams took control as they ended the half on a 13-5 run to stretch their lead to 41-30 heading into halftime.
Through most of the third quarter, the Rams maintained their lead. But late in the frame, the Ponies went on a run to cut their deficit to 59-53 heading to the final quarter. The Ponies then opened the fourth with a basket to make it a 59-55 game.
The Rams found their stride again as they stretched their lead out to 70-58 halfway through the fourth. The Ponies continued to battle and were able to cut the deficit to single digits. But the Rams held on to win and ended the Ponies' season.
In the loss, Jackson Headdress led the Ponies with 20 points. Matt Huse scored 11 points while his teammates Tre Gary and Kash Keller each scored 10 points. Northrop finished the contest with 42 points for the Rams.
With their loss, the Ponies finished their season with an overall record of 16-8. The Ponies finished fourth at the Eastern A Divisionals to qualify for the Class A State Tournament where they went 0-2 over the weekend. As the Ponies move forward into next season, they will look to improve on this finish and make a deeper postseason run.
