Havre girls win, boys fall to open state tournament

In Butte this past Thursday, both the Havre High girls and boys basketball teams began the Class A State Tournament. As both teams looked to go on a run, the girls advanced with a 54-44 win over Browning while the boys lost, 60-55, to Hamilton.

The HHS girls basketball team took care of business against Browning to advance in the tournament and keep their hopes of a fourth straight state championship alive. The Ponies had a hot start taking a 24-14 lead. By halftime, Havre had pushed the lead to 39-22.

With the big lead, the Ponies cruised in the second half to advance to the semifinals. It was a balanced attack for Havre as Ariana Gary led the way with 13 points while Sierra Parker and Amaya Jarvis both scored 10 points for the Ponies.

While the girls advanced, the HHS boys could not as they lost, 60-55, to Hamilton on Thursday night to open the tournament. The Ponies fell behind early as they trailed, 17-9, to end the first quarter. The Broncs remained in control as they took a 34-24 lead into halftime.

But in the third quarter, the Ponies responded to cut their deficit to 47-44 heading into the fourth. Unfortunately, the Ponies could not complete the comeback as Hamilton held on to win to send Havre to the loser-out bracket. Tre Gary finished the contest with 21 points for the Ponies.

The Class A State Tournaments will continue today in Butte. The HHS boys team will face Billings Central in an elimination game while the HHS girls team will play Billings Central in the semifinals tonight at 6:30 p.m.
