Pioneers advance to coveted state tourney

The Big Sandy Pioneers are going to state for the first time in more than two decades.

After finishing third in the District 9C two weeks ago in Havre, the Pioneers capped off a thrilling run in the Northern C with a challenge game win over DGS on Monday night in Great Falls.

DGS had lost in the championship game Saturday night, while the Pioneers beat 9C rival CJI in the consolation game. That set up the challenge game Monday night.

The Pioneers trailed 10-9 after the first quarter and were tied at 21-21 at halftime. The second half was also tight, but the Pioneers were able to pull away late with a 56-52 win, booking a ticket to state.

Eva Yeadon scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Big Sandy, while Keira Galbavy added nine points and 11 boards.

With the win Monday night, Big Sandy will join Roy-Winifred at the Class C state tournament March 8-10 back at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls.
