This past weekend at the Northern B Divisional Boys Basketball Tournament in Malta, the Chinook boys basketball team was looking to go on a run in order to qualify for the Class B State Tournament in a few weeks. Instead, the Sugarbeeters went 1-2 and failed to qualify for state, putting an end to their season.
The Sugarbeeters began the tournament Thursday with an 87-43 loss to the Malta Mustangs. Malta took control early as it raced out to a 26-15 lead in the first quarter. The Mustangs then began to dominate as they stretched their lead out to 59-28 heading into halftime.
With the big lead in the second half, the Mustangs pulled away for the win to send the Sugarbeeters to the loser-out bracket. Jackson Nordboe finished the game with 15 points to lead the Sugarbeeters.
On Friday, the Sugarbeeters rebounded with an 83-66 win over Cut Bank in a loser-out game. Chinook had a good start creating a 21-16 lead in the first quarter. By halftime, the Sugarbeeters had stretched their lead out to 39-30.
Chinook began to pull away as it took a 62-44 lead into the fourth. With the lead, the Sugarbeeters coasted to victory to stay alive in the tournament. Nordboe finished the game with 22 points while his teammate Carson Nissen scored 21 points of his own.
But the Sugarbeeters could not build off that win as their season came to an end with a 61-59 loss to Glasgow in a loser-out game on Saturday morning. The Sugarbeeters fell behind early on as they trailed, 17-15, in the opening frame. But Chinook responded to take a 35-30 lead heading into halftime.
The Scotties responded in the third quarter to tie the game, 44-44, heading into the fourth quarter. The Scotties then played well enough to hold off the Sugarbeeters and win the game. With its loss, Chinook ended its season with a record of 6-18.
