Bread Show set for Montana Seed Show

Press release

Editor’s note: Watch for more on the Montana Seed Show in upcoming editions of Havre Daily News.

Spring is just around the corner, so the Montana Seed Show in Harlem will be coming soon. March 7-9 mark the dates for this annual event, which will be held at Harlem High School. Entry date and time for the Bread Show is Friday, March 8, between 8 and 9:30 a.m. at the school’s big gym.

Categories (both youth and adult) are: white bread, 100% whole wheat bread, machine white bread and machine 50% combination whole wheat bread. Also, speciality yeast breads, a popular newer category, may be entered by both adults and youth. Prizes are awarded in each category. Adult first place winners may not enter that category for three years, but are eligible to enter the other categories. Youth winners may enter each year.

Regular white bread and 100% whole wheat bread should be baked in standard size loaf pans. Bread machine entries will depend on the bread machine. All entries should be enclosed in a large zip lock bag or in a large plastic bag with a twist tie. Recipes, with directions, (enclosed in a small plastic bag) are to be included with entries. Please don’t use butter on top of the entry.

All breads will be auctioned at the Show. People with questions can contact bread chairman Karolee Cronk (353-2874).

Come enter your bread and enjoy all the events that the Seed Show has to offer.

White Bread — Sandy Boardman

2 cups warm water

2 Tbl. dry yeast

½ cup sugar

1 ¼ tsp. salt

1 egg

¼ cup soft shortening

6 ½ cups flour

Mix together warm water, yeast, sugar and salt; let stand for 5 minutes to let yeast dissolve. Add egg and soft shortening. Stir in four; knead only enough to shape into soft ball.

Place in greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator. Punch down often.

After 8 hours, shape into loaves and let rise until dough is 1 inch over top of pan. Bake at 375 for 25-35 minutes. Place on race to cool. For home use, brush top with butter.
