Hi-Line boys and girls basketball teams survive at Northern C

At the Great Falls Four Seasons Arena this past Thursday, the Northern C Divisional Boys and Girls Basketball Tournaments continued. Looking to stay alive in order to qualify for the Class C State Tournaments, several Hi-Line teams played well while others faltered.

Thursday's action started early in the morning with a loser-out game between the Fort Benton boys basketball team and Roy-Winifred. Though their season was on the line, the Longhorns could not keep pace as they lost, 70-45, to be eliminated from the tournament.

The Outlaws took control early as they jumped out to a 19-12 lead in the opening frame. In the second quarter, Roy-Winifred maintained control to take a 42-27 lead into halftime. The Outlaws then dominated the second half to pull away for the win over the Longhorns.

In their final game of the season, Kellan Diekhans led the Longhorns with 12 points. With the loss, the Longhorns finished 0-2 in the Northern C Divisional and finished their season with an overall record of 9-14.

Later on Thursday, the Chester-Joplin-Inverness girls basketball team defeated Simms, 43-30, in a loser-out game to stay alive in the Northern C Divisional Girls Basketball Tournament. The Hawks took a 9-4 lead in the first quarter and then got in a rhythm to take a 23-9 lead into halftime.

The Simms Tigers fought back in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 31-20 heading into the fourth. But the Hawks held on to win the game and keep their season alive. Brie Mattson led CJI with 14 points while her teammate Brynn Kamerzell contributed 10 points to the winning effort.

Later Thursday in the boys tournament, the CJI boys basketball team defeated Dutton-Brady, 65-52, to advance to the tournament semifinals. The Hawks got off to a hot start as they took a 26-13 lead in the first quarter. But the Diamond Backs responded to cut the score to 34-26 heading into halftime.

The Hawks regained control as they stretched their lead out to 49-32. They then held steady in the fourth quarter to secure the win and advance in the tournament. Karson Pulst led the Hawks with 27 points while Elijah Sanders scored 16 points.

Back in the girls tournament, the Fort Benton girls basketball team defeated Cascade, 42-37, to advance to the semifinals. The Longhorns started strong as they took a 13-7 lead in the first quarter. By halftime, they maintained control with a 24-17 lead.

The Badgers responded in the third quarter to cut their deficit to 34-32. But the Longhorns held them off in the fourth to survive and advance. Fort Benton's Casha Corder led all scorers with 13 points.

Thursday wrapped up with the Big Sandy girls basketball team suffering a 47-31 loss to Roy-Winifred. It was a close contest early on as it was tied, 8-8, to end the first quarter. But the Outlaws pulled ahead to take a 23-20 lead into halftime.

It remained a close game as the Outlaws took a 31-26 lead into the fourth. But the Outlaws dominated the final frame to win the game and send the Pioneers to the loser-out bracket. Eva Yeadon led Big Sandy with 12 points in the loss.
