Jim was born November 30, 1934, in Havre to Alexander and Mary (Donahue) Stewart, the sixth of seven children. He was raised on the family farm outside of Box Elder, and graduated from Box Elder High School in 1953. Following graduation, Jim entered the U.S. Army and served until his honorable discharge in 1956.
In 1962, he married Donna Burke in Butte, and the couple made their home on the family farm, where they raised their two children. Jim worked alongside his father as a farmer for the majority of his adult life, retiring from farm work in the late 1980s. While farming, Jim also worked as a contractor in construction. He fully retired in the late 1990s, and spent his time with his beloved wife, Donna.
In his earlier years, Jim enjoyed skiing, horses, family vacations to Glacier, supporting his children in their endeavors, and some limited travel. In recent years, his hobbies included Sudoku puzzles, reading, and watching rodeos. Jim was a member of St. Anthony's and St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Churches, the Knights of Columbus and the Havre Eagles Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna, in 2000; daughter, Debbie in 2015; parents, Alex and Mary Stewart; and his six sisters, Marjorie Wilson, Agnes Deppel, Jean Whitemore, Ursuline Stoynoff, Kathryn Rosey and Arlene Johnston.
Jim is survived by his son, Daniel (Andrew Podagrosi) Stewart of Alabama, and many nieces and nephews.
