Students set to compete at Hill County Spelling Bee

The winners and placers of the local school spelling bees are gearing up to compete at the Hill County Spelling Bee, set for Thursday starting at 9 a.m. in the Havre Middle School Assembly Room, with a chance to earn a berth at the state spelling bee on the line.

The state bee, the 59th Annual Treasure State Spelling Bee is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. March 9 on the Montana State University campus in Bozeman.

The local school district spelling bees have been held in recent weeks with the individual school spelling winners and alternates chosen from these local contests to create the contestant list for the 57th Hill County Spelling Bee.

County Superintendent of Schools Vicki Proctor said the the public is invited to attend the county bee Thursday.

This year’s word pronouncer will be Marie Deegan. She will be assisted by spelling bee judges Marge Suek, Jackie Hanson and Jake Strissel. Other event officials are Char Sticka, Sandy Wilson and Julie Monson. Diane McLean will host the event. Special help has been provided by Havre Middle School Principal Curt Leeds and HMS Head of Maintenance Brent King.
