In the final weekend of the regular season, the Havre High boys and girls basketball teams were looking to play well on their road trip. In their final action before the postseason, the Blue Ponies finished strong as the HHS girls team picked up a 52-44 win over Lewistown and then a 59-27 victory at Glendive. The HHS boys team also did well on the road defeating Lewistown, 63-57, and then beating Glendive, 55-48.
The Ponies began their final slate of games with a doubleheader at Lewistown Thursday night. The night started with the HHS girls team defeating Lewistown, 52-44. The Ponies did have a slow start as they fell behind, 11-10, in the opening frame. But they found their stride to take a 31-23 lead into halftime.
The Golden Eagles stayed in the game as Havre only had a 46-37 lead heading into the fourth. But the Ponies were able to hold them off to close out the win to start their road trip and completed their season sweep of Lewistown.
Later Thursday, the HHS boys team started its road trip with a 63-57 win over the Lewistown Golden Eagles. The Ponies got off to a strong start taking an 18-11 lead in the first quarter. They held onto momentum by taking a 37-32 lead into halftime.
The Golden Eagles tried to keep pace as they cut the deficit to 50-47 heading to the fourth quarter. But the Ponies held them off in the final frame to secure the win and make it a clean sweep of Lewistown this winter.
The HHS girls basketball team wrapped up the regular season with its 59-27 win on the road against Glendive Friday night. The Ponies came out slow the second night in a row as they fell behind, 9-5, in the opening frame. But they took complete control in the second quarter to take a 29-13 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Ponies continued to play well to pull away for the big victory to end the regular season. The HHS girls basketball team finishes the regular season with a record of 7-1 in the Northeast A and an overall record of 15-3. They also end the regular season on a seven-game winning streak.
The HHS boys team defeated Glendive, 55-48, on the road this past Friday. The Ponies did have a slow start as they fell behind, 13-12, in the first quarter. But they recovered in the second quarter to take a 35-26 lead into halftime.
The Red Devils kept with it as they cut Havre's lead to 42-37 heading into the fourth quarter. But the Ponies stood tall in the fourth to walk away with the road victory to end the regular season. They finish the regular season with an overall record of 14-4 and a Northeast A record of 7-1.
The HHS boys and girls basketball teams will next begin the postseason with the Eastern A Divisional Tournaments at the Metra in Billings this week. The tournament will begin this Thursday and will run through Saturday.
