Needing a win in a big way, the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team got just that.
The Lights beat Montana Western 72-68 Thursday night in Dillon. The Lights took the lead early and pushed ahead to nine points. The Bulldogs went on a run to tie the game up and from there it was anyone's game.
Jacob Randall tipped in a shot to take a halftime lead for the Lights, 32-29. The second half was close, as the Lights went on a 9-0 run to take the lead by 10 with 2:13 left on the clock. Western cut into the lead down the stretch, but it wasn't enough to win the game.
The Lights were led by Zackry Martinez who went 8-17 from the field with 31 points. Dae'Kwon Watson added 14 points and nine rebounds. Xavier Bailey added eight rebounds.
The Bulldogs were led by Abi Adedo who went 50 percent from the field with 15 points. Michael Haverfield added 15 points going 6-11 from the field.
With the win, the Lights improved to 3-9 in the Frontier Conference.
The Montana State University-Northern Skylights dropped a tough road game against Montana Western, 69-57 Thursday night in Dillon.
The Skylights pushed the lead in the first quarter to 19-14. The Bulldogs had a good second quarter taking the lead into halftime, 34-30. Montana Western had a great second half, as they extended the lead to take the game.
The Skylights were led by Taya Trottier who had 15 points going 3-4 from the three-point line and added six assists. McKenzie Long added nine points going 3-7 from the three. Shyan Krass led the team in rebounds with six.
The Bulldogs were led by Jordan Sweeney who went 6-9 from the three-point line with 23 points. Joelnell Momberg added 18 points going 6-9 from the field.
The Skylights are 10-15 this season and 4-8 in the Frontier Conference.
Both the Lights and Skylights will host Rocky Mountain College in their Armory Gymnasium finale Saturday. The women play at 2 p.m. and the men tip off at 4 on Senior Day at Northern.
