MDT requesting public comment on U.S. 2 work in Havre

Also requesting comment on signage project across northern Montana

The Montana Department of Transportation is seeking public comment on proposed plans to rehabilitate 2 miles of concrete pavement on U.S. Highway 2 in Havre, as well as on their plan to install new road signs across northern Montana.

A release from MDT says the proposed work on First Street would be from just east of the Ninth Avenue Northwest intersection, east of Holiday Village Hill, to the 22nd Avenue North intersection, past Harvest Moon Lanes on the eastern end of Havre. The work would include crack sealing, replacement of broken concrete panels, grinding of the surface, updated signage, and the creation of new pavement markings.

The stamped brick pattern crosswalks would also be resurfaced to repair damage and improve the walking experience, the release said.

MDT is also proposing the mid-block pedestrian crossing near Montana Avenue be removed to improve the efficiency of snow removal, as recent studies have found that pedestrian usage of the crossing is minimal.

"If the crosswalk and median island are removed, a new crosswalk will be striped on the west side of the intersection with Montana Avenue," MDT's release said.

The project is part of the department's five-year planning horizon, but could be started early depending on available funds and design completion, as no new right of way or utility relocations would be necessary.

The department is also proposing upgrades to signage throughout northern Montana, including in Hill and Blaine counties, a safety project they hope will reduce "roadway departures."

Construction for that project is tentatively planned for 2025.

"Partnering with the community is an important part of properly planning for future projects. MDT welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project," a press release for the projects said.
