After several months of play and hard work, the postseason is getting started with the District 9C Boys Basketball Tournament in Havre this week. Over the course of a few days, schools from the 9C and Hi-Line will compete to qualify for the Northern C Divisionals the following week.
The Box Elder Bears enter this week's tournament as the No. 1 seed after going 18-0 during the regular season. Thanks to a 12-0 record in the 9C, the Bears earned a bye to open the tournament and will not have to play until this Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Bears will face either the Fort Benton Longhorns or the North Star Knights, who will play each other Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. The Longhorns enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed with a 5-7 conference record and an overall record of 6-12 this season. The Knights will be the No. 5 seed thanks to a 4-8 conference record and a 9-9 overall record this winter.
The tournament will continue Wednesday at 6 p.m. with a matchup between the Turner Tornadoes and the Big Sandy Pioneers. Turner earned the No. 3 seed after going 11-7 this season with a 7-5 record in the 9C. Big Sandy will be the No. 6 seed thanks to a conference record of 4-8 and an overall record of 6-12 this winter.
Wednesday's slate will wrap up at 7:30 p.m. with a game between the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks and the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds. The Hawks should be one of the favorites in the tournament as the No. 2 seed. During the regular season, they went 10-2 in the 9C and 15-2 overall. Meanwhile, the No. 7 seed T-Birds will be searching for their first win of the year after going 0-12 in conference play and 0-18 in the regular season this winter.
The semifinal games of the tournament will be held Thursday at 7 and 8:30 p.m. The Bears have already advanced to the semifinals thanks to their bye to open the tournament. The consolation game will then be Friday at 7 p.m. The tournament will end with the championship Friday at 8:30 p.m. With the top three teams in the tournament advancing in the postseason, there should be plenty of competitive and exciting basketball on the Hi-Line over the next few days.
The District 9C Boys Basketball Tournament begins this Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Havre High Gymnasium.
