Havre basketball splits doubleheader against Malta

It was a night of mixed results for Havre High basketball at Havre High Gymnasium this past Tuesday night. The HHS girls basketball team played well in its 73-48 victory over the visiting Malta M-Ettes. However, the HHS boys basketball team suffered a 68-62 overtime loss to the Malta Mustangs.

In the girls game, the Blue Ponies got rolling early as they raced out to a 22-11 lead in the opening frame. They did not slow down as they extended the lead to 40-23 heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Ponies pulled away for good to walk away with the big victory. The Ponies now stand at 11-3 overall this season as they head into the final four games of the regular season.

In the boys game, the Ponies had a slow start as they fell behind, 26-7, in the opening frame. But in the second quarter, the Ponies began to climb their way back as they cut the deficit to 38-25 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Havre continued to play well to cut the deficit to 49-47 heading to the fourth. In the final frame, the Ponies and Mustangs went back and forth to make it a 61-61 game to end regulation play and force overtime. But the Ponies could not keep up in overtime as Malta ran away for the win.

Tre Gary led the Ponies with 18 points. Matt Huse, Brayden Ereaux and Jackson Headdress all scored 10 points in the losing effort for Havre. With the loss, the Ponies fell to 10-4 this season.

The HHS girls basketball team will next play Lewistown at HHS Gymnasium Friday at 4 p.m. The HHS boys basketball will play Lewistown right after at 5:30 p.m.
