David Hugh Greenwood, 86, passed away January 20, 2024, at his home in Havre, MT.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, February 2, 2024, at Van Orsdel Methodist Church in Havre, MT. A celebration of life service is tentatively planned for spring/summer 2024 in Belle Fourche, SD.
Dave was born in Springfield, South Dakota, the youngest of three children, to Burl and Leah Greenwood September 13, 1937. He graduated from Springfield High school in 1955 and went on to earn his bachelor's degree from University of South Dakota, his Master of Education from South Dakota State University and his Doctorate in Education from University of New Mexico.
July 30, 1966, he married Judy Ackerman. They enjoyed 57 years together.
Over the years, he taught physical education and coached football at School of Mines in Rapid City and at Belle Fourche High school in Belle Fourche, SD. He was a physical education and recreation professor at Northern Montana College, where he also began the wrestling program.
He was active in his community as a member of The Rotary, Elks Club, board member of Independence Bank, Havre Chamber board director, Van Orsdel United Methodist Church member and more.
Some hobbies Dave enjoyed were golfing, playing cards, canoeing, hang gliding, flying airplanes and flying kites. Dave also played guitar and accordion and was a Volkswagon/car enthusiast. Dave also enjoyed traveling and meeting new people.
Dave had a definite zest for life, always ready to find the next best thing to try out or convince others that they needed to buy it while it's hot! There are few Lights sporting events that he missed. He was a great historian of almost any subject in conversations making him an ideal board game teammate. He was never in company of a stranger, could tell a story or joke like no other. Most of all, he was ready for a laugh and loved people.
Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Burl and Leah Greenwood; sister, Rhea Dean Grindle; brother, Thomas Greenwood; great-nephew Nathan Sandnes.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Greenwood; daughter, Kari (Jason) King; son, Kraig (Melissa) Greenwood; grandson, Zack (Abby) King; granddaughters, Lacee (Jake) Degoyette, Abbey Greenwood, Bridgette Greenwood and Daisy Greenwood; great-grandson, Jalen Degoyette; nephews Ron Greenwood, Wade Greenwood; niece Shawn Sandnes, along with numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
Memorial donations may be made to the David Greenwood Memorial Fund at Independence Bank in Havre, MT.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Wilderness Funeral Homes.
