Both the Havre High boys and girls basketball teams have been on a roll this winter. But this past weekend, both teams ran into trouble when they faced Miles City and Billings Central. The boys team did defeat Miles City, 78-49, but then suffered a 78-70 loss to Billings Central. The HHS girls team had a tougher weekend with a 45-43 loss to Miles City and a 55-38 loss to Billings Central.
The HHS boys team began the weekend with a 78-49 victory at home against Miles City this past Friday. The Ponies got rolling early as they jumped out to a 22-14 lead. They continued to play well in the second half as they took a 42-33 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Ponies pulled away for the victory to improve to 2-1 in the Northeast A. Shane Patacsil played well with 24 points while Tre Gary and Carter Spangler contributed with 12 points each.
But Saturday at home, the Ponies suffered a 78-70 loss to the visiting Billings Central Rams. The Ponies started out keeping it close as they only trailed, 19-18, at the end of the opening frame. But by halftime, the Rams had stretched their lead 40-33.
The Rams kept playing well in the third quarter as they took a 62-53 lead into the final frame. The Ponies tried to come back, but the Rams held on for the win that dropped Havre to 8-3 overall this winter. Gary played well in the loss with 29 points while Patacsil scored 14 points.
The HHS girls team had a rough weekend, starting with a 45-43 loss to Miles City at home Friday. The Ponies got off to a slow start as they trailed, 14-6, at the end of the first quarter. The Cowgirls then dominated the second quarter to take a 37-14 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Ponies began to claw their way back into the contest. Heading into the fourth, the Ponies had cut the deficit to 39-32. The Ponies continued to play well in the fourth, but there was not enough time to complete the comeback as Havre fell to 2-1 in the Northeast A.
The HHS girls team then suffered a 55-38 loss on the road to Billings Central this past Saturday. The Rams took control early with a 13-9 lead in the first quarter. The Ponies were unable to wrangle away momentum as the Rams took a 26-18 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Rams pulled away to drop Havre to 8-3 overall this season. Tierra Parker led the Ponies with 14 points in the losing effort.
The HHS girls basketball team will next play against Glendive this Friday at home at 6 p.m. The HHS boys basketball team will then face Glendive right after at 7:30 p.m. inside Havre High Gymnasium.
