Wind chill moves out as snow moves in this week

While the frigid cold seems poised to lessen on the Hi-Line in the next few days the area will likely see an inundation of snow as the National Weather Service upgrades its Winter Storm advisory, set to start tonight, to a more severe winter storm warning.

The warning begins tonight at 11 p.m. and will be active until 11 a.m. Thursday for Havre, Rocky Boy, Lewistown and Hilger, as well as Hill County and the Bear Paw Mountains broadly and the south of Blaine and Fergus counties.

The warning says heavy snow is expected, with between 4 and 9 inches of accumulation possible.

"The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 511 or visiting the MDT Road Report website," the warning says. "To see a graphical representation of the degree of stress on young livestosk please visit our webpage and select Local Programs then Cold Air Advisory for Newborn Livestock."

The Weather Service predicts a 40 percent chance of snow during the day, mainly after 3 p.m. with a high near 8 and a low of -2 tonight, with wind chill values as low as -25.

The heavy snow will begin in the late afternoon going into tonight, with an estimated accumulation of between 1 and 3 inches, with another 2 to 4 inches Wednesday.

Wednesday will also be colder with a predicted high of 7 and a low of -10, though the wind is expected to lessen, with values of -20 at the lowest predicted.

Snow will likely continue into Thursday morning, but is predicted to taper off around midday.

However, the temperature will drop soon after, with a predicted high of -1 that day, and a low of -23.

Friday is predicted to warm up slightly, to a high of 8 and low of -3 and the weekend will continue to warm with a predicted high of 31 Saturday, and 35 Sunday and Monday, with lows in the high teens.
