Havre High girls basketball starts 2024 strong 

Coming into the new year, the Havre High girls basketball team looked to build on its undefeated start to the season. And in their road trip this past weekend, the Blue Ponies went 2-1 as they defeated Malta and Miles City but lost to Hardin for their first loss of the year.

The Blue Ponies began their road trip Thursday with its 60-34 win over Malta. It took a while for the Ponies to find their groove as they only led, 8-3, at the end of the opening frame. But the Ponies got rolling to take a 25-13 lead into halftime. Amaya Jarvis got hot with 12 points in the second quarter.

The Ponies then dominated the third quarter to take a 44-15 lead into the fourth, where they cruised to a win to open 2024. Jarvis finished the night with a game-high 18 points while Ariana Gary contributed to the win with eight points.

But Friday, the Ponies suffered their first loss of the season when they lost, 57-54, to Hardin on the road. The Ponies played well to start the night, but Hardin took a 19-15 lead to start the game. By halftime, Hardin held a 32-26 lead over the Ponies.

The Ponies fell behind further in the third, but they came back to make it a 46-39 deficit heading to the fourth quarter. The Ponies again fell behind by double digits, but again came back down the stretch. But it was not enough as Hardin held on to win to hand Havre its first loss of the year.

The Ponies rebounded Saturday with a 55-49 conference win on the road against Miles City. It was not easy as the Ponies fell behind 16-12 in the first quarter. But they got going in the second quarter to take a 27-26 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Ponies rode their momentum out to a 39-33 lead. The Cowgirls attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, but the Ponies held on to win to start 1-0 in the Northeast A and improve to 7-1 overall this season.

The HHS girls basketball team will next play Glendive on the road this Saturday at 4 p.m.
