Skylights finish 2023 on a positive note

This past weekend, the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team wrapped up 2023 with a pair of games at Armory Gymnasium. And in their final games of the year, the Skylights played well as they defeated Ambrose University, 84-40, and beat Lakeland University, 73-38.

The Skylights played against Ambrose University Thursday afternoon. From the jump, the Skylights took control as they raced out to a 21-8 lead. By halftime, the Skylights had built their lead to 45-18.

In the second half with the big lead, the Skylights cruised to a victory that snapped their three-game losing streak. As a team, the Skylights shot 47.9 percent from the field and 83.3 percent from the free–throw line. Shyan Krass finished the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Savannah Toms scored 18 points on 8-for-11 shooting.

Saturday, the Skylights continued to play well when they met Lakeland University. In the opening quarter, the Skylights took control with a 19-12 lead. By halftime, the Skylights stretched the lead to 32-18.

In the second half, the Skylights pulled away to secure their second straight victory. Karina Cabrera led the way with 15 points as she shot 4-for-5 from the field and 6-for-8 from the charity stripe. Toms and Ryley Kehr contributed to the win with 14 points each.

At the end of 2023, the Skylights now have a record of 6-7.

MSU-N women's basketball will return to play with a conference game against Montana Western Saturday at 2 p.m. in Dillon.
