Carol Chagnon passed away December 16, 2023, at her home due to natural causes at the age of 86.
Carol was born March 11, 1937, in Havre, MT, to Charles and Helen Gould. She was one of seven children. She attended schools in Havre. Carol met and married Paul Chagnon in 1955, and together they had five children.
Carol helped Paul with the business Lee's Texaco and ran the café. She also helped with the ranching, and, in 1972, she went to work for the county as the secretary in juvenile probation. In 1986, Carol was elected as Hill County Justice of the Peace. She loved her job and was very proud to be called "Judge Chagnon." She retired when Paul's health required her to care for him.
She was active in the Kiwanis and Eagles clubs. Carol enjoyed entertaining at her home, playing her accordion and piano and making large meals for everyone. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, and her daily crossword.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, and three siblings.
Carol is survived by her children, Leon Chagnon (Sandy Boardman), Les Chagnon, Candy Chagnon (Dave Anderson), Carla Chagnon (Dan Jasinski), and Lindon (Nita) Chagnon; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; siblings Irene Miles, Roland Gould and Mary Light, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 21, 2023, at Fifth Avenue Christian Church with a luncheon to follow at the Eagles Club. Burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. at the Chagnon Ranch, and all are welcome.
