Warm week, colder weekend and little chance for a white Christmas

While the area enjoys an unseasonably warm winter week, cold is expected to return somewhat this holiday weekend, but with little chance of a white Christmas.

Average highs for this time of year is just below freezing, but the National Weather Service predicts that lows will stay at or just below freezing until Friday evening, with the high for today is predicted to be 43.

Wednesday is predicted to reach a high of 51, with highs of 50 Thursday and 51 Friday.

This December has been unseasonably warm overall, with highs jumping between just above freezing and an almost balmy 63 Dec. 5, and not a single day so far has been at or below normal average temperatures, even with the first day of winter two days away.

Today and Wednesday are predicted to have some cloud cover, but the forecast says Thursday and Friday are likely to see some of that clear up.

As for precipitation, the week looks fairly dry after today.

While some areas got a little precipitation early this morning, chances for the rest of the day are minimal, and none is predicted until the weekend.

Calm winds from the east are predicted to arrive this afternoon, rising to up to 8 miles per hour after midnight from the southwest.

Winds from the southwest are predicted to remain through Friday and possibly beyond, with speeds rising to between 10 and 16 miles per hour, and gusts of up to 23 miles per hour Wednesday.

Thursday's winds are predicted to slow slightly, with a range of 10 to 14 miles per hour and gusts of up to 22 miles per hour, and a slow slightly again Friday, to a range of 10 to 13 miles per hour with gusts of up to 20 miles per hour.

These winds are predicted to be calmer during the nights, staying between 7 and 10 miles per hour between Wednesday and Friday night.

This weekend the weather is expected to change a bit for the colder, with a high of 41 Saturday and a low of around 20, followed by a colder Sunday with a high of 35 and low of 17.

Saturday has a chance of rain or snow throughout the day, but none predicted for Sunday, though both are predicted to be a bit cloudy.

A white Christmas seems unlikely this year, with no precipitation predicted for that day, but it will likely remain cold with a predicted high of 36.
