Blue Ponies wrap up 2023 with CMR Holiday Classic

In their final action of 2023, the Havre High wrestling teams were looking for a strong performance before they head into their winter break. And in the CMR Holiday Classic in Great Falls this past weekend, the HHS boys wrestling team finished sixth while the HHS girls wrestling team took 12th.

The HHS boys scored 174.5 total points to finish sixth in its tournament. Billings West finished first with 270 total points while Great Falls took second and Kalispell finished third. Over the weekend, several Blue Ponies performed well.

Reed Mantle finished fifth wrestling in the 126-pound weight class. He started the tournament with pins against CMR’s Eli Harrell, Circle’s Aiden Hall and St. Ignatius/Charlo’s Kai O’Brien. In the consolation bracket, Mantle again pinned Harrell and then pinned Billings Skyview’s Cole Schaub. In the fifth-place match, Mantle won by forfeit against Cashton Spolar from Helena Capital.

Reinhard Bold also finished fifth for Havre as he wrestled at 152 pounds. He started his run with a 21-6 technical fall against Jose Lara from Great Falls/MSDB. He then pinned Choteau’s Nathan Gunderson and Columbia Falls’ Billy Gustafson. In the fifth-place match, Bold pinned Laurel’s Kade Wersland.

At 285 pounds, Tommy Lewis also finished fifth for the Ponies. He started the tournament with a pin against Simms’ Honor Carrier. In the consolation bracket, Lewis pinned Bigfork’s Holland Jantzen, Laurel’s Tye Brown, Helena’s Trent Salway and Bigfork’s Felix Zamburgs. In the fifth-place match, Lewis pinned Brandon Cole from Billings West.

Havre’s Matt Lemer finished seventh at 132 pounds this past weekend. He started his run with pins against Matt Fowles from Great Falls/CMR and Sno Momberg from Browning. In the consolation round, Lemer pinned Blake Hoerner from Columbia Falls and Tatum Todd from Three Forks/Ennis. Lemer then won a 9-2 decision against Michael Moorman from Laurel. In the seventh-place match, Lemer won a 2-1 decision against Forsythe’s Payne Reilly.

Pierce Caplette also finished seventh for Havre as he wrestled at 182 pounds. He started the weekend with pins against Tegan Jones from Conrad and Quincy King from Missoula Big Sky/Loyola Sacred Heart. In a consolation match, Caplette pinned Hesston Hinebauch from Lockwood. In the seventh-place match, Caplette pinned Bigfork’s Evan Tidwell.

At 138 pounds, Carson Harris finished in eighth place for the Ponies. He first pinned Valier’s Brock Bales to start the weekend. In the consolation bracket, Harris pinned Butte’s Cameron Fleege, Missoula Big Sky/Loyola Sacred Heart’s Dilan Courtney, Broadwater’s Blake Wellenstein, Missoula Sentinel’s Joel Vermillion and Gallatin’s John Jackson.

The HHS girls wrestling team also competed this past weekend, scoring 65 total points to finish 12th in its tournament. Billings Senior scored 337 total points to win the CMR Girls Holiday Classic while Ronan finished second and Kalispell took third.

Aliyah Stiffarm finished second as she wrestled at 235 pounds. She started her run with pins against Ronan’s Judasha Ellsworth and Cut Bank’s Jess Elings. She then pinned Teaka Mahlmeister from Billings Senior.

Angelina Siebanaller took seventh for the Ponies at 235 pounds. She started the weekend with a pin against Carlotta Giaquinto from Hamilton. In the consolation bracket, Siebanaller pinned Missoula Hellgate’s Kenna Schma. In the seventh-place match, Siebanaller won a 5-0 decision against Kendahl Guardipee from Browning.

The HHS wrestling teams will return to competition with the Glasgow Dual in Glasgow on Jan. 2.
