As the Havre High girls basketball team heads into this winter, it will be coming off its third straight state championship. And in their first two games of the year this past weekend, the Blue Ponies started their title defense with a 69-41 road win over East Helena and then a 59-51 home win against Lockwood.
The Ponies started their season Friday on the road against East Helena. The Ponies did start out slow as they were tied, 14-14, at the end of the opening frame. And by halftime, the Vigilantes had a 30-21 lead over the Ponies.
After halftime, the Ponies put things together and got on a roll. After trailing at halftime, the Ponies took a 47-36 lead into the fourth. The Ponies then pulled away in the fourth to secure the win. Ariana Gary led Havre with 23 points while Sierra Parker scored 12 points for the Ponies.
After coming back to win their season opener, the Ponies continued to play well at home against Lockwood this past Saturday. The Ponies got off to a better start as they took a 17-14 lead in the first quarter. But the Lions kept with it as Havre only had a 31-30 lead at halftime.
The Ponies maintained their lead as they took a 47-41 lead into the fourth. In the final frame, the Ponies held off Lockwood to walk away with the win and improve their record to 2-0.
The HHS girls basketball team will next play Whitefish and Loyola in the East/West Showdown at HHS Gymnasium this weekend.
