After several weeks of preparation, the Havre High boys basketball team finally began the season this past weekend. And in their first action of the winter, the Blue Ponies looked good as they defeated East Helena, 82-48, on the road and then defeated Lockwood, 56-53, at home.
The Ponies started their season Friday with their road win against East Helena. They got rolling early as they held a 16-6 lead over the Vigilantes by the end of the opening quarter. By halftime, the Ponies led 35-20.
In the second half, the Ponies continued to play well as they pulled away for the win to open their season. Kash Keller led Havre with 16 points in his first game of the year. Other Ponies that contributed include Tre Gary with 13 points and Shane Patacsil with 12 points.
The Ponies found themselves in a much more competitive game in their home opener at Havre High Gymnasium Saturday.
The visiting Lockwood Lions came to play as they took a 17-11 lead in the first quarter. The Lions then dominated the second quarter to take a 36-15 lead into halftime.
Despite the deficit, the Ponies kept with it as they slowly climbed their way back into the game. Heading into the fourth, the Ponies had cut their deficit to 51-37. The Ponies then dominated the fourth quarter to complete the comeback and move to 2-0 on the season.
The HHS boys basketball team will next play Whitefish and Loyola in the East/West Showdown at HHS Gymnasium this weekend.
