The season has finally arrived for the Havre High boys and girls basketball teams as they begin their seasons this weekend. Tonight, both teams will open the season with a road trip to East Helena. Then Saturday, both HHS squads will host Lockwood for their home openers.
Both HHS basketball teams will head on the road to face East Helena tonight. The East Helena boys team comes to the game with an 0-1 record after losing to Butte Central, 69-41, to open their season. The Vigilantes will be looking to improve on their record of 7-12 from last season.
The East Helena girls basketball team is off to a better start this season with a 39-38 win over Butte Central in its season opener. And the Vigilantes will be looking to play well against the Blue Ponies if they want to improve on their 8-12 record from last winter.
On Saturday, the Ponies will host the Lockwood Lions in a doubleheader at Havre High Gymnasium. The Lockwood boys basketball team is coming off a season where it went 15-7 but failed to qualify for the Class A State Tournament. But the Lions are off to a hot start this year with a 64-50 win over defending-state champion Lewistown in its season opener.
The Lockwood girls basketball team is coming off a season where it went 7-13. However, the Lions are off to a 1-0 start this winter thanks to a 57-37 win over Lewistown to open the season.
As they head into their first games of the season, both HHS basketball teams look for strong starts to the year. The HHS boys basketball team is looking to improve on a season where it finished with a record of 14-9 but could not qualify for the Class A State Tournament.
The HHS girls basketball team looks for a strong start for hopefully another state championship run. The Ponies have won three straight Class A State championships, including last year where they went 20-4. If they want to prepare themselves for another deep postseason run, the work starts this weekend for the Ponies.
The HHS boys basketball team will play East Helena tonight at 5 p.m. and the HHS girls basketball team will play East Helena tonight at 6:30 p.m. The HHS boys team will then play Lockwood at HHS Gymnasium this Saturday at 4 p.m. The HHS girls basketball team will then play Lockwood right after at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
