Christmas tree collection for fish habitat begins Christmas Eve

The Fresno Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and the City of Havre again are working together to collect Christmas trees for perch habitat, part of a years-long collaboration to enhance fishing operations at Fresno Reservoir.

Local residents are encouraged to donate their used Christmas trees in a dumpster provided by the city at Memorial Park on Fifth Avenue near the softball complex for two weeks starting Christmas Eve.

This spring Montana FWP and the local Walleyes Unlimited members will place the trees in the shallow waters on the banks of the reservoir.

Walleyes Unlimited members have said that these trees create vital habitat for bait fish in general, but it's especially good for perch, which lay their eggs in brush to hide them from potential predators, creating a healthier population of fish for walleye to eat.

Between 100 and 150 trees are typically collected during these events.
