In decades-old traditions, the holiday season kicked off Thursday with community Thanksgiving dinners in both Chinook and Havre.

But the Thanksgiving offerings are just the beginning for the season.

A listing of many events going on starting this week are in the Hometown Christmas section inserted in today's Havre Daily News.

The section was intended for release and prepared Wednesday, but due to mechanical issues could not be printed and included until today's edition.

The ongoing holiday festivities includes Chinook's Parade of Lights and Festival of Wreaths and the Havre Elks Cocktails and Crafts today, Big Sandy's Christmas Stroll Saturday and Havre's community tree lighting and a plethora of other activities also Saturday.

Events in the area go on right through New Year's Eve.

And a local service group is helping people get their homes and businesses ready for the holiday.

A Christmas tree sale, hosted by Havre Algeria Shriner's "Rat Patrol" is starting Saturday, Nov. 25, at 701 First St., the lot north of Gary & Leo's Fresh Foods.

The Christmas tree and swag sale will run Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m., and Monday through Friday, 4-7 p.m., while trees last. The trees were cut the week of Nov. 13 in Montana and Oregon.

Proceeds from the sale will go toward the Shriner's Rat Patrol parade unit.
