As the fall sports season soon comes to an end, some teams from the Hi-Line last weekend ended their run for a state championship.
One of those teams is the Chester-Joplin-Inverness volleyball team, which competed in the Class C State Volleyball Tournament in Bozeman this past weekend.
After qualifying as the Northern No. 2 seed, the Hawks saw their season come to an end with two losses to open the tournament. In their tournament opener Thursday, the Hawks lost, 3-0, to Western No. 1 seed Manhattan Christian.
The Hawks fell behind early in the match as they lost the first two sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-14. Looking to stay alive, the Hawks played much better in the third set. However, they still lost, 25-21, to end the match and drop into the loser-out bracket.
And their season came to an end with a 3-0 loss to Eastern No. 1 seed Broadus Friday morning. The Hawks lost, 25-13, to open the match and then they lost the second set, 25-21. Even with their season on the line, the Hawks lost, 25-18, in the third set for the sweep.
The CJI volleyball team was not the only Hi-Line team that saw its season come to an end last weekend. This past Saturday, the Fort Benton 8-man football team ended their year with a 48-12 road loss to Fairview in a playoff semifinal game.
Early on, the Longhorns came to play with a two-yard touchdown run from Layne Wallace to take a 6-0 lead. But the rest of the way, it was the Warriors' game. Fairview first tied the game with a 29-yard touchdown run from Brock Schlothauer.
The Warriors then took the lead with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Tjelde to Deacon Gackle. Fairview then extended the lead to 21-6 with a 12-yard touchdown run from Tyler Loan.
The Warriors continued to roll in the second quarter. Wyatt McPherson scored on a 10-yard touchdown run for the Warriors and then Tjelde found Schlothauer for a 23-yard touchdown pass. Tjelde then found Gackle for a 24-yard score to give Fairview a 42-6 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Tjelde threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Gackle to make it a 48-6 game. In the fourth, the Longhorns finally responded with a three-yard touchdown run from Cade Ball, but it was too late.
With their victory, the Fairview Warriors advanced to the state championship game where they will face Belt. Meanwhile, the Fort Benton Longhorns finished their season with an overall record of 8-3.
