Kaftan wins national award for essay on patriotism

St. Jude Thaddeus School student Kenan Kaftan was presented an national award by the American Legion Auxiliary Americanism Project Wednesday, for an essay he wrote on patriotism.

The award was presented just after Mass that morning by Americanism Program Havre Chair Marlyn Damson, along with a trophy and a letter from the project's national chair Michele DeGennaro.

"It was a privilege for me to read your remarkable essay on 'what does patriotism mean to you?' I found it enjoyable and insightful," Damson said, reading from DeGennaro's letter.

Kaftan received $50 in prize money as well as an additional $50 to be donated in his name to the American Legion Auxiliary's Children of Warriors National Presidents' Scholarship fund, which provides money to children of veterans.
