Postseason high school football has arrived on the Hi-Line with several local schools still alive for a shot at a state championship. This past weekend, some north-central Montana schools got wins to advance in the postseason while some saw their seasons come to an end.
In the 8-man playoffs, the Fort Benton Longhorns opened the postseason with a 36-33 win over Lone Peak at home Saturday. After a slow start for both teams, the Bighorns scored a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Longhorns got on the scoreboard with a one-yard touchdown run from Cade Ball. Truman Giese then connected with David Olson on a two-point attempt to give Fort Benton an 8-7 lead. The Bighorns responded with a touchdown of their own to take a 13-7 lead. But the Longhorns responded with a 30-yard touchdown run from Ball and a two-point run from Olson to take a 16-13 lead.
It was then a shootout in the fourth quarter. Lone Peak scored to start the fourth to retake the lead. But Ball scored on a 7-yard touchdown run and then a two-point try to give Fort Benton a 24-20 lead. The Bighorns responded with a return touchdown on the ensuing kickoff. Again, Fort Benton responded with a 57-yard touchdown run from Giese to take a 30-26 lead.
But defense remained absent in the fourth as the Bighorns scored again to take a 33-26 lead. Needing a play, Ball came through again for the Longhorns with a 4-yard touchdown run that gave his team a 36-33 lead. The Longhorns then held on for the win and advanced to the quarterfinals.
The Fort Benton football team will next face Superior in the quarterfinals this Saturday.

Westby-Grenora 30,
Big Sandy 6
Last season was a magical season for the Big Sandy Pioneers as they won the state championship in six-man football. But that will not be the case this year as the Pioneers' season came to an end with a 30-6 loss to Westby-Grenora at home this past Saturday.
From the jump, the Thunder took control of the game. After a touchdown to take the lead, the Thunder returned an interception for a score to take a 14-0 lead into halftime. The Thunder then scored another pair of touchdowns in the third to extend the lead to 28-0.
Meanwhile, the Big Sandy offense continued to struggle. The Thunder recorded a safety to make it a 30-0 game in the fourth. The Pioneers finally got on the scoreboard thanks to a nine-yard touchdown from Karter Jurenka, but there was not enough time to mount a comeback.
With the loss, the Pioneers' season came to an end. They finished their year with a record of 8-2.
