The Montana State University-Northern Skylights volleyball team upset No. 10 Montana Tech Thursday at the Armory Gymnasium.
The Skylights won in four sets (25-23, 26-24, 18-25 and 25-19).
The Skylights took the lead early in the first set 9-4. Montana Tech went on a 5-0 run to take the lead 16-13. Northern put together a couple small runs to take the set.
Northern took the lead in the second set, until Montana Tech went on an 8-0 to take the lead 22-20. The Skylights finished the set on a 6-2 run to take the set. The Orediggers controlled the third match to take the set. Montana Tech took the lead early, as the Skylights battled back and took the lead 13-11. The Skylights ended the match on a 7-1 run.
The Skylights were led by Alana Graves with 17 kills hitting a percentage of .484. Macee Murphy added nine kills. Emily Feller led the team in assists with 23. Baily Egan led the team in digs with 22. The Orediggers were led by Oliver Muir, who had 21 kills hitting a percentage of .213. Rhys Layton led the team with 33 assists in the match. Sarah Hopcroft led the team with 17 digs.
The win was a huge one for Northern, but, MSU-N couldn’t keep the momentum going.
The Skylights lost in a Frontier Conference matchup against University of Providence Saturday in Great Falls. The Skylights lost in four sets (25-23, 22-25, 27-25 and 25-10). The first set was anyone’s game, as the score went back and forth. Providence finally went on a 4-0 to take the set. The second set was just as intense. The Skylights went on a 4-0 run to take the lead by two. The Argo’s did the same thing back to take the lead 21-19. Northern finished the set on a 6-1 run to take set two. Set three was the same way, as the Skylights took the lead 17-13. Providence battled back going on a 6-1 run win the set. Providence took over the fourth match pushing the lead going on a 9-0 run to take the game.
The Skylights were led by Lexa Stock, who tallied 16 kills with a hitting percentage of .256. Alana Graves added 12 kills. Macee Murphy led the team in assists with 25 and added 14 digs. Baily Egan led the team with 18.
The Argo’s were led by Jenna Thorne, who had 14 kills, hitting a percentage of .462. Nina Janjic and Allyah Tokelau each added 13 kills. Natalia Slazynska led the team with 31 assists in the match. Taylor Christensen also led the team in digs with 25.
The weekend split left Northern at 10-13 overall and 2-6 in the Frontier. MSU-N plays at Carroll College Wednesday night.
