SACRAMENTO, CA - With touchdowns on four consecutive possessions in the second half, second-ranked Montana State secured an impressive 42-30 victory over fourth-ranked Sacramento State on Saturday night at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California.
The Bobcats (6-1 overall, 4-0 Big Sky) led 14-7 at halftime before asserting themselves with their trademark run game over the final two quarters, with Julius Davis rushing for 110 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries for the night, and Tommy Mellott rushing for 105 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.
In a game that was televised nationally on ESPN2, Davis and Mellott spearheaded an offensive charge that gashed Sacramento State (5-2 overall, 2-2 Big Sky) for 328 rushing yards, the fifth straight game the Bobcats have gone for over 300 yards on the ground.
On the other side of the ball, Montana State's defense forced two turnovers, with Jon Johnson's 19-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the second quarter highlighting a stout effort.
Montana State will remain on the road next week for another top-ten road showdown when they travel to Moscow on Oct. 28 to face Idaho.
The Montana Grizzlies had their bye last week and will host Northern Colorado this Saturday at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
